Scolari announces Brazil squad for Confederations Cup

Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari has unveiled his squad for the Confederations Cup, which begins on 15 June. The headline news is that, contrary to expectations, neither Kaká nor Ronaldinho Gaúcho has made the cut. There is, however, a surprise call-up for young Atlético Mineiro forward Bernard.

The full squad is as follows:

Júlio César (QPR)
Diego Cavalieri (Fluminense)
Jefferson (Botafogo)

David Luiz (Chelsea)
Thiago Silva (PSG)
Réver (Atlético Mineiro)
Dante (Bayern Munich)
Marcelo (Real Madrid)
Filipe Luís (Atlético Madrid)
Daniel Alves (Barcelona)
Jean (Fluminense)

Paulinho (Corinthians)
Fernando (Grêmio)
Luiz Gustavo (Bayern Munich)
Oscar (Chelsea)
Hernanes (Lazio)
Jádson (São Paulo)

Bernard (Atlético Mineiro)
Lucas (PSG)
Hulk (Zenit St Petersburg)
Leandro Damião (Internacional)
Fred (Fluminense)
Neymar (Santos)

Former Liverpool player Diego Cavalieri joins Júlio César and Jefferson among the goalkeepers, seeing off competition from Diego Alves and Victor. There are few surprises in defence, although the selection of Jean (who has played most of the season in midfield for Fluminense) may raise the odd eyebrow. Dedé, who has yet to play for Cruzeiro since his protracted transfer from Vasco da Gama, finds himself frozen out for now.

In midfield, Ramires and Lucas Leiva miss out, as does Corinthians guard dog Ralf. The inclusion of Leandro Damião is somewhat surprising given that he featured in neither of Felipão's first two Brazil squads but, coupled with Fred's selection, perhaps underlines the coach's preference for a target man up front. The supporting cast of attackers has a decidedly youthful feel, with Bernard edging out both his club colleague Ronaldinho and Kaká, who flattered to deceive in the seleção's last bout of friendlies.

  1. Just a little observation: You forgot Jadson (midfielder, São Paulo).

  2. The offense is not very good, I'm very please with our defense
And you got to have a veteran such as ronaldinho or kaka

    1. This offense is really good. Neymar, Fred, Hulk, Damiao, Oscar, Gustavo, Lucas and Jadson are all really good scoring players. I would be worried about the midfield.

    3. Think about midfield.. Who handle this vital position???
And without kaka who is the play maker???

  3. Kaka and Ramires shouldn't be left off. Hernanes and Jadson don't deserve spots on the team.

    1. Hernanes doesn't deserve a spot? I disagree... his inclusion into midfield has been Brazil biggest advancement since WC 2010... He connects the defense to offense with his wide verity of passing abilities.

    2. I agree with Andrelvis and others about Hernanes. I think Kaka should have been there.
I think we all witnessed in the past few exhibition games that Brazil had that Hernanes was the puzzle instead of being the key.

  6. Andrelvis - Completely disagree about Hernanes. Superb player who has been performing consistently well in one of Europe's top leagues.

Adam - Maybe, but three months of good form just not a big enough sample size. If he can keep it up next season, however...

    2. i Watched him play in Chelsea's Europa League Truimph!!! he has been still strong enough on the position he was offered to play. If not Kaka, Ramires has been there to anchor the midfield....

  12. Wensley - yeah I totally agree, if you can't take both of them you got to have at least one them. You always need some veteran that has that kind of experience in tougher games. I'm so sad that none of them got in to the squad...

    1. Kaka was a fool to remain at Madrid; totally ruin his national chances by staying there. Could have being at Arsenal marshaling that midfield and would have being easy for national selection.

  14. Coutinho isn't even close to Oscar. But, if he shows better during the year, he may be considered for World Cup.

  15. Leaving out Ramires is a big mistake. I'd line Brazil up like this:
    Julio Cesar
Daniel Alves Thiago Silva Dante Marcelo
    Ramires David Luiz
    Oscar
    Lucas Hulk Neymar

    1. a big mistake? how? he hasnt even been performing that well with brazil. Technically Luis gustavo is better. He neutralizes the midfield much better, and that is a fact
