Vasco's exciting Copa Sul-Americana run was brought to an abrupt end on Wednesday, as Universidad de Chile sealed a comfortable aggregate win. Despite fielding a stronger side than in previous matches, the Rio side conceded a goal in each half: Gustavo Canales opened the scoring with a powerful effort, before Eduardo Vargas wrapped things up late on. Vasco, who have already qualified for next season's Libertadores, are unlikely to be too concerned by the loss, and will now turn their attentions to the weekend's decisive Brasileirão action.

Vasco drew with Universidad de Chile on Wednesday night, a result perfectly in keeping with their poor-first-leg-amazing-second-leg approach to the Copa Sul-Americana.

Employing a slightly stronger side than in previous first legs, Vasco enjoyed the better of the opening period against La U. Good opportunities fell to Felipe and Elton before the Rio side took the lead: Bernardo ran onto Allan's deflected pass and shot low past the brilliantly named Jhonny Herrera. The Chilean giants fought their way back into contention, however, and levelled after the interval. Osvaldo González timed his run perfectly from a free-kick, flicking a header over the flailing Fernando Prass. Next week's return leg should be a cracker... if Vasco aren't overly preoccupied by the league by that point.

Oh Vasco, you temptress. Getting thrashed against Aurora and then racking up eight second leg goals to progress to the Copa Sul-Americana quarter finals. Putting in a limp performance against Universitario in Peru, convincing everyone that you didn't care. Going behind in the return fixture, taunting us further. You bloody tease.

Things started pretty well for Vasco at the São Januário; the hosts were awarded a penalty midway through the first half after Juninho Pernambucano was bundled over inside the penalty area. Diego Souza, a picture of calm, slotted home to reduce the aggregate deficit to just one goal. Some uncharacteristically poor goalkeeping from Fernando Prass, however, allowed Raúl Ruidíaz to put Universitario back in command, and when Jesús Rabanal struck just after the interval, Vasco looked all but doomed.

But the Rio side weren't done. Élton (John) scored within seconds of the restart, before La U 'keeper Luis Llontop allowed Dedé's speculative cross to sneak in at the near post ten minutes later. "If I was [Llontop's] friend," laughed Globo commentator Neto, brilliantly, "I wouldn't let him throw my kids in the air." Quite.

Dedé - who, recall, is a central defender - went on to stamp his mark even more firmly on proceedings. After brilliantly heading home Vasco's fourth, he turned provider, setting up Alecsandro's 81st minute strike. Predictably, that final coup de grâce prompted wild celebrations among the vascaínos present. The Rio club remain on course to complete a historic Copa do Brasil/Série A/Copa Sul-Americana treble.

Vasco Slump to Universario Loss

Vasco da Gama lost the first leg of their Copa Sul-Americana quarter final with Universitario. They didn't seem to care too much (resting many of their first-team stalwarts), so I won't pretend to either. The Gigante da Colina need to record a two-goal win back in Rio next week to stand a chance of progressing.

Vasco Hit Eight to Progress in Sul-Americana; Fla, São Paulo and Botafogo All Eliminated

It wasn't a great week for Brazilian clubs in the Copa Sul-Americana; Flamengo, Botafogo and São Paulo were all eliminated, with barely a whimper of protest between them. Vasco, however, kept the flag flying in emphatic style...

Vasco da Game welcomed Aurora to the São Januário, hoping to overturn a two-goal deficit from the first leg. They achieved that feat in the first half, flying into a 3-1 lead thanks to stunning Bernardo goal and a brace from Alecsandro. Things were looking good for the Gigante da Colina, but they about were to get a whole lot better. Vasco were nigh-on unplayable in the second period, adding five more goals (and conceded another couple), to record an 8-3 victory. Vasco will play Peruvian side Universitario in the quarter finals.

Dog day afternoon: surely the best reason for a game to be delayed.

The garra showed by Vasco was simply not matched by the remaining Brazilian sides, who were all soundly beaten. Emerson Leão's reign at São Paulo got off to a disappointing start, as the Tricolor lost 2-0 to Libertad. Luís Fabiano, who (re)opened his account for the club in last week's first leg, turned villain in Asunción, giving away a first half penalty with wild hack. Botafogo had an even tougher evening, getting thrashed by Santa Fé. Not even the sight of a canine pitch invader (who managed to evade capture for a good few minutes) was enough to raise Brazilian smiles in Colombia. Flamengo also ended their campaign without much of a fight, losing 1-0 to Universitario.

Botafogo Waste Chance to Go Top of Brasileirão; Flamengo Thrashed by Universidad de Chile

There were three midweek games involving Brazilian clubs this week, two of them in the Copa Sul-Americana. The other, a postponed Brasileirão game, could prove more significant in the long-run...

Breathe a sigh of relief. At times it looked as though they'd never make it, but Santos' Big Catch-up™ is over. Having had what seems like half of their league fixtures this year postponed for one reason or another (Libertadores, international matches), the Peixe are finally on an even footing with their Brasileirão competitors. Although a Série A challenge has passed the seasiders by, they can still have a big say in the eventual destination of the title, as demonstrated on Wednesday evening.

Hair today, gone tomorrow: Neymar salutes the Santos faithful.

Santos turned in an excellent display at the Vila, beating in-form Botafogo thanks to two goaks before the interval. Neymar, who has added a peroxide tint to his already extravagant barnet, scored the opener, prodding into the far corner after some typically skilful approach play. The lead was swiftly doubled, courtesy of Borges' 22nd Brasileirão goal of the season. The striker could hardly be more different in style to Neymar, as evidenced by his strike - a primitive hammer blow that fizzed passed the blameless Jefferson. Botafogo showed signs of recovery in the second period, but could not manage to reduce the arrears. They remain two points behind Corinthians and Vasco.

When Vasco were roundly beaten by Aurora in the Sul-Americana a fortnight ago, they at least had the excuse of having fielded a reserve side. How Flamengo fans must wish Vanderlei Luxemburgo had done the same on Wednesday night. As it was, a strong Rubro-Negro side was humbled by Universidad de Chile; the visitors romped to a convincing 4-0 win in Rio de Janeiro. Gustavo Lorenzetti scored the pick of the goals, bending home a low effort to round off a devastating second half counter attack. At the Morumbi, meanwhile, interim coach Milton Cruz guided São Paulo to a win over Libertad. Luís Fabiano scored his first goal since returning to the club with a well-taken volley, leaving the Tricolor in pole position to reach the quarter finals.

Vasco Reserves Beaten by Aurora; Santos Succumb to Grêmio

A short (and belated) midweek round-up for you, dear reader, with one match apiece from the Copa Sul-Americana and the Brasileirão. Without further ado, then...

Aurora 3-1 Vasco
With the Copa do Brasil title (and a spot in the 2012 Libertadores) already in the bag, and their domestic title challenge developing nicely, it's fair to say that Vasco da Gama aren't too fussed about the Copa Sul-Americana this year. The Gigante da Colina sent a reserve side to face Aurora on Wednesday night and were soundly beaten by the Bolivian outfit.

Vasco actually took the lead in the 40th minute, and in comical style; Bernardo tapped home after a long ball from Fágner (one of only two first choice players on display for the Rio de Janeiro side) bounced over the head of Aurora goalkeeper Pablo Lanz. The hosts reacted well, however, and took the lead through strikes from Aquilino Villalba and Augusto Andeveris. With time ticking down, Jair Reinoso sealed the victory with an emphatic volley. Vasco, then, have it all to do, but probably won't be too concerned about doing it.

Santos continued The Great Catch-up (coming soon to a cinema near you) at the Olímpico, losing to Grêmio in a match originally scheduled for gameweek 11 of the Campeonato Brasileiro. Much was made in the build-up to the game of Borges' return to Porto Alegre (the Peixe frontman counts Grêmio among his former clubs), but the spotlight was to be stolen by an altogether less celebrated striker. Brandão, who has struggled to readapt to Brazilian football since returning from a spell in Europe, nodded home the only goal of the game in the 9th minute.

NB - Cruzeiro and São Paulo also played on Wednesday night. That match, however, was part of gameweek 28, and so shall be included in Monday's round-up rather than here.

Botafogo Held by Santa Fé in Copa Sul-Americana

God bless the Copa Sul-Americana and it's wonderfully counter-intuitive schedule. Yes, this midweek round-up consists of only one match, and thus will be laughably short. With Vasco set to get their last 16 tie underway next week, and São Paulo and Flamengo only continuing their campaigns in late October (seriously), it was left to Botafogo to fly the Brazilian flag on Thursday night.

With Série A success understandably his side's main priority, Caio Júnior rested a number of top players for the visit of Santa Fé. Fábio Ferreira, Marcelo Mattos and Maicosuel were all given the evening off, whilst Elkeson started on the bench. Botafogo's weakened side struggled in the opening period, and fell behind to a lovely team goal. Alejandro Bernal swapped passes with a teammate on the edge of the area and burst to the byeline, before picking out Omar Pérez in the six-yard box. The Santa Fé captain completed the easiest of finishes, inspiring Colombian hopes.

Anything you Canedo: Caio grabs Botafogo's equaliser.

Botafogo improved considerably after the break, buoyed by the introduction of Elkeson (who was on Brazil duty just 24 hours earlier). It was he who created the equaliser, sliding an impeccable pass through to Caio Canedo, who lofted coolly over the goalkeeper. It was a welcome return to prominence for Caio, a one-time prodigy whose star has dipped over the last twelve months. If Botafogo can harness his undoubted ability, they will lend yet another string to their formidable attacking bow. On Thursday, their late pressure came to nothing, meaning that they face a tricky second leg in Bogotá. That match is scheduled to take at some point before February 2019.*

Damião Fires Inter to Recopa Glory; Rio Clubs Progress in Sul-Americana

Roll up, roll up! Welcome to the Brazilian midweek football variety show! With no fewer than three competitions taking place, there was something for everyone this week; the second leg of the Recopa Sul-Americana between Internacional and Independiente, the return ties of the all-Brazilian Copa Sul-Americana qualifiers, and even a little morsel of Brasileirão action. On with the show!

Internacional 3-1 Independiente (4-3 on aggregate)
New Inter coach Dorival Júnior must be counting his blessings. Having spend the last few months slogging away at Atlético Mineiro (to precious little avail), his arrival in Porto Alegre instantly coincided with the Colorado's second super cup title; a triumph that reaffirms their status as continental heavyweights. In truth (and as Dorival humbly admitted in his post-match press conference), he had his new charges to thank. Internacional's is a relatively settled squad; players such as Andrés D'Alessandro, Pablo Guiñazú, Índio, and Bolívar have all remained loyal to the Beira-Rio side, and form an enviable spine. Wednesday's victory, however, belonged to a relative newcomer to the Inter scene.

Leandro Damião has been in majestic form this year; the striker has built on the promise of last season, racking up over 30 goals for the Colorado in 2011. He added two more to his tally against Independiente, and in some style too. His first was a wonderful individual effort; Damião picked the ball up near the corner flag, sashayed between two bewildered defenders, before poking a shot into the far corner. The second - a well-struck left-footed volley - was less flashy, but provided ample evidence of the 22-year-old's superb technique. Not bad for a player who, just four years ago, was playing at semi-professional level in the São Paulo region.

To their credit, Independiente rallied in the second period; Maxi Velázquez fired past Muriel immediately after the interval to raise Argentine hopes. This, though, was to be Inter's night. With the final whistle approaching, former Manchester City striker Jô was fouled in the area, giving referee Jorge Larrionda no option but to award a penalty. Experienced left-back Kléber swept home from the spot, sending the Beira-Rio into raptures. One worry, though, will linger in the minds of the Inter faithful. The club's last Recopa victory, in 2007, preceded the sale of Alexandre Pato to Milan. The departure of Leandro Damião - which looks probable in January, if not now - would complete a bitter symmetry.

It was a great week for the carioca sides in the Sul-Americana; all three of Rio's representatives secured safe passage to the last 16 of the competition. Botafogo - who did most of the hard work in the first leg - saw off Atlético Mineiro at the Engenhão, thanks largely to one of the worst penalty decisions of the year so far. Galo defender Leonardo Silva was rugby-tackled by Herrera, and looked on in utter horror as he proceeded to be penalised and booked. Herrera himself held back the giggles to convert the resultant spot kick. Vasco also reached the next round, despite being beaten 3-1 by Palmeiras on Thursday night. Former Verdão midfielder Jumar netted the all-important away goal for Vasco, blasting home from range.

São Paulo made short work of their qualifier, easing past Ceará at the Morumbi. Brazil startlet Lucas was on fine form, drilling home a fine effort before turning provider for Dagoberto. Flamengo also had a relatively comfortable evening; the Rubro-Negro struck late to seal a 2-0 aggregate victory over Atlético-PR. Ronaldinho bagged the goal for Fla with a simple header, but received considerably more attention for his celebration; a send-up of the dance from the song Parado na Esquina. Anything other than the João Sorrisão celebration is fine by me.

Brasileirão Round-up
Santos played the second of their three games in hand on Wednesday night, hosting Fluminense at the Vila. Neymar celebrated the birth of his first son Davi Lucca with some playground magic, but it would be Série A top scorer Borges who shot the Peixe to victory; he struck twice in the first half to render Rafael Moura's goal irrelevant. Finally, here were signs that Santos are reawakening after their post-Libertadores slumber; unfortunately, they're now fully sixteen points off the pace.

Advantage Independiente in Recopa; Rio Clubs Start Well in Copa Sul-Americana

A slightly different midweek round-up for you this time, reader. With the Brasileirão finally taking a breather from its relentless HERE'S TWENTY GAMES EVERY SEVEN DAYS, DEAL WITH IT rhetoric, some rather more unobtrusive competitions crawled into the spotlight. Firstly, there was the start of the Copa Sul-Americana (the South American equivalent of the Europa League, for all you Europhiles), which pitted a group of not-quite-the-best-but-certainly-not-the-worst-thank-you Brazilian clubs against one another. The first leg of the Recopa Sul-Americana (which involves last year's Libertadores winners facing their Sul-Americana equivalents) between Independiente and Internacional also took place. In Colombia, meanwhile, the Brazil U20 side continued their World Cup campaign. Oh, and for all you stick-in-the-muds, there was a single Série A game to tide us over until the weekend. Deep breath now...

Much water has passed under the bridge since Internacional won the Libertadores last year. Twelve months, one Club World Cup disaster and two coaches later, the Colorado travelled to Argentina, hoping to add the Recopa to their trophy cabinet. The hosts, who defeated Brazilian side Goiás to claim the continent's secondary prize in 2010, started strongly; Inter 'keeper Muriel was peppered with shots early on. On a rare foray forward, however, the Porto Alegre side snatched the lead; a cross from Nei was deflected into the path of Leandro Damião, who turned expertly home.

Independiente quickly reestablished their dominance, equalising through Maxi Velázquez and laying siege to the Inter goal after the break. When Marco Pérez finally bagged the winner with a deflected free-kick, the Avellaneda sighed with relief; a draw would have flattered the visitors enormously. Caretaker boss Osmar Loss (or Dorival Júnior, the man likely to be taking over) will hope for better at the Beira-Rio.

With his Flamengo side setting the pace in the Campeonato Brasileiro, Vanderlei Luxemburgo would be forgiven for taking continental competition with a pinch of salt this year. The 59-year-old duly rested some of his key players for Wednesday's clash with Atlético-PR; Thiago Neves and Renato Abreu were rested, whilst Diego Maurício earnt a rare start in attack. A tight match was eventually settled by Ronaldinho, who came off the bench to convert a late penalty. The Furacão must win the second leg to stand a chance of progressing. Botafogo also have one foot in the next round; goals from Herrera and Maicosuel helped them to a 2-1 win over Atlético Mineiro.

In Fortaleza, an injury time strike from Marcelo Nicácio handed Ceará a narrow victory over São Paulo. The Tricolor, who had led the match thanks to Rivaldo's close range effort, have work to do at the Morumbi. Vasco, meanwhile, completed a good set of results for the Rio de Janeiro clubs, brushing aside Palmeiras at the São Januário. The Gigante da Colina went ahead in fortuitous fashion - Bernardo's corner kick ricocheted in off Diego Souza, who knew little about it - before a second half strike from Élton sealed the win. Vasco and Palmeiras will soon be sick of the sight of one another; they meet in Série A at the weekend, before squaring off again in the second leg.

U20 World Cup Round-up
Brazil sealed their place in the quarter finals of the U20 World Cup, beating Saudi Arabia with some ease on Wednesday night. After an evenly-matched first half, the seleção went ahead through Henrique, who ran onto Willian José's delightful flick and finished with aplomb. Palmeiras leftback Gabriel Silva - whose presence in the side owes much to the injury sustained by Alex Sandro earlier in the tournament - then made it two, sweeping home following another Willian assist. The icing on the cake came in the dying minutes; Oscar showed great vision to find substitute Dudu, whose finish crept under Abdullah Alsdairy in the Saudi Arabia goal. Ney Franco's men will play Spain in the last eight.

Brasileirão Round-up
Santos finally played one of their million games in hand, hosting rivals Corinthians at the Vila Belmiro. The result? A stale goalless draw, about which I shall say no more.

Goiás Defeated in Sul-Americana Final; Grêmio Qualify for Libertadores

Goiás' continental fairytale came to an abrupt end last night, as they lost the Copa Sul-americana final to Independiente. The Esmeraldino had built up a 2-0 advantage from the first leg, but came unstuck in Argentina; losing on penalties after their opponents had drawn level on aggregate. Disappointment, then, for Arthur Neto's men, but the result was celebrated in the blue and black half of Porto Alegre; Grêmio now qualify for the 2011 Libertadores.

The hosts, needing a two-goal victory, predictably flew out of the blocks in the opening minutes. They were boosted by a goal within 20 minutes; Julian Velazquez tucked home neatly after Goiás 'keeper Harlei had parried a shot. Within seconds, however, the Esmeraldino silenced the Estádio Libertadores. Wellington Saçi broke down the left, and crossed for Rafael Moura (who else?) to power in a header.

The first half continued to be played at breakneck pace, with chances falling for both sides. Independiente regained the lead in fortuitous fashion; Ernando's attempted clearance ricocheted off Facundo Parra, and looped into the far corner of the net. The home side had the wind in their sales, and swiftly bagged a third. The Goiás backline failed to cut out Patricio Rodríguez's cross from the left, allowing Parra, who was lying on the floor after challenging for a header, to poke out a leg and flick the ball past Harlei. It was another bizarre goal, but Independiente didn't care a jot; they needed just one more to guarantee the title.

Unfortunately for the hosts, the attacking verve of the opening period was replaced by conservatism and nerves after the interval; they looked more concerned about not conceding than they were about scoring. Consequently, the best chances fell to Goiás; Otacílio Neto had a goal chalked off for offside, and Rafael Moura could only blast into the side netting in the final minutes. The teams, level on aggregate (the Sul-americana has no away goals rule) went to extra time, and the visitors continued to push forward; Rafael Tolói struck the woodwork with their best opportunity.

Independiente, who had offered precious little since their third goal, must have been pleased to see the game go to penalties. Journeyman striker Felipe was the unlucky player whose miss would prove crucial for Goiás, as El Diablo Rojo expertly converted all five of their spot-kicks. As the Independiente faithful celebrated victory, the Goiás players shuffled despondently into the dressing room. The disappointing final chapter, though, shouldn't take too much away from what was a thoroughly impressive cup run, especially from a team who will play in Série B next term.

Goiás Continue to Confound Critics in First Leg of Copa Sul-Americana Final

It's a funny old game, this football. This year, for the first time, the winners of the Copa Sul-americana (the South American equivalent of the Europa League) will receive the significant prize of automatic qualification for next year's Copa Libertadores. Rather than being a battle between two of the continent's big hitters, though, the final is being contested by two clubs who have struggled in domestic competition this term; Independiente are currently languishing near the bottom of the Argentine Primera División, while Goiás have already been relegated from Série A following a tepid campaign. It was the Brazilian club, however, who continued their inspirational cup form last night with a 2-0 first leg win at the Serra Dourada.

Once again it was Rafael 'He-Man' Moura who made the breakthrough for the Esmeraldino, tucking home calmly when Carlos Alberto fortuitously diverted the ball into his path. Moura has undergone a remarkable media-led transformation in the last couple of months; from hapless targetman to one of Brazil's most feared strikers. A move to one of the country's more reknowned clubs surely beckons in the off-season.

The home fans, jumping following Moura's opener, were sent into raptures just minutes later when Otacilío Neto added a fortunate second. Douglas' scuffed cross looked certain to be cut out by an Independiente defender, but somehow dribbled through to Neto, who made no mistake. Goiás remained in the ascendency, and gained a numerical advantage when Silvera was dismissed for the Argentine side. Despite their efforts, though, the scoreline remained 2-0; Artur Neto will hope that his charges have done enough ahead of next-week's second leg.

Goiás Stun Palmeiras to Reach Copa Sul-Americana Final

Having won the away leg 1-0 last week, Palmeiras were considered favourites to advance from their all-Brazilian Copa Sul-americana semi-final with Goiás. Coach Luiz Felipe Scolari was clearly prioritising the competition; frequently resting his side's star players in recent Série A matches so as to keep them fresh for this game. Goiás, however, tore up the scipt last night, coming from behind to dump the Verdão out of the tournament.

In front of a packed Pacaembu, the hosts took control early on; Tinga rattled the post with a powerful drive, and Luan tested Goiás 'keeper Harlei. With half an hour gone, Palmeiras broke the deadlock; Edinho lofted a lovely diagonal pass for Luan, who held off his marker before volleying into the far corner. The goal have the São Paulo side a 2-0 aggegate advantage, leaving Goiás with plenty to do. Their task was made easier with a slightly fortuitous goal on the stroke of halftime; Carlos Alberto's close range header took a heavy deflection off Tinga, and beat Deola in the Palmeiras goal.

Palmeiras had their share of chances in the second period, with Kléber in particular guilty of some wasteful finishing. Their profligacy would be punished by Goiás, who scored their crucial second goal with ten minutes remaining. Marcão's cross from the left was headed back across goal by Rafael Moura, giving Ernando the easiest of finishes. The entire Pacaembu fell silent, stunned at the away side's comeback. Palmeiras tried to recover in the final minutes, but the dye was cast; Goiás progress to the final on away goals. They will meet either LDU Quito or Independiente, who will settle their semi-final this evening.

Advantage Palmeiras in Copa Sul-Americana Semi

Brazilian interest in the 2010 Copa Sul-americana has boiled down to two teams; Luiz Felipe Scolari's Palmeiras, and Série A strugglers Goiás. The two met at the Serra Dourada on Wednesday in the first leg of their semi-final, with both sides gunning for a final berth against LDU or Independiente.

Palmeiras were again without Chilean playmaker Jorge Valdivia, who has struggled to overcome a series of niggling injuries since his arrival. The trio of Tinga, Luan, and former Galatasaray man Lincoln were charged with providing support to the team's attacking focal point, Kléber. Goiás have been carried in recent weeks by Rafael Moura, and the big forward once again provided the main threat to the opposition defence. In a tight game of few clear chances, it was (as so often this term) Marcos Assunção who made the difference for the Verdão. The midfielder received the ball midway into the Goiás half, and advanced swiftly before rifling a glorious drive into the top corner of Harlei's goal. Assunção's 2010 highlight reel will make compulsive viewing.

Despite their best efforts, Goiás could not find a foothold in the match, and were restricted to only a handful of opportunities. Their best chance fell to Otacílio Neto, who saw his effort well saved by Palmeiras 'keeper Deola. The Esmeraldino now have it all to do in next week's return leg.

Palmeiras and Goiás Through to Copa Sul-Americana Semi-Finals

And then there were two. Palmeiras and Goiás knocked out fellow Brazilian sides Atlético-MG and Avaí to secure a semi-final showdown later this month. The winner of the clash between the Verdão and the Esmeraldino (a veritable green derby) will then face either Independiente or LDU in the final.

In front of 35,000 fans at the Pacaembu, Palmeiras comfortably overcame Atlético Mineiro. Despite seeing playmaker Jorge Valdivia limp off after just 15 minutes (the latest in a series of setbacks for the Chilean), Luiz Felipe Scolari's men took control of the tie, and went ahead through Marcos Assunção. The dead-ball expert has been in fine goalscoring form of late, but even he must have been delighted with this one; a gol olímpico, directly from a corner kick. Luan sealed the victory late in the second half, tucking away neatly after a swift Verdão break.

At Avaí's Ressacada ground, meanwhile, a single goal from Rafael Moura was enough to send Série A strugglers Goiás through. The big target man tapped home from close range on the stroke of half time, after the home defence failed to clear a corner. Avaí, despite their home advantage, looked sluggish throughout, and must now concentrate their efforts on beating the drop in the league.

Goals for Gladiator and He-Man as Copa Sul-Americana Ties End All Square

One of the things that I love most about football in Brazil is that everything and everyone seems to have a nickname. Only in Brazil could it make sense to report a goal by The Gladiator at the Alligator Arena. Yet precisely this happened on Wednesday night, in one of the two all-Brazilian quarter-finals of the Copa Sul-Americana.

At the Arena do Jacaré, in-form Atlético Mineiro played host to Luiz Felipe Scolari's Palmeiras side. In a lively game, it was the Verdão who took the lead; Kléber (the aforementioned 'Gladiator') exchanged passes with Tinga before stetching to side-foot past Renan Ribeiro. The referee awarded Palmeiras a penalty soon after, but overturned his own decision after consultation with his linesman; Lincoln, who was brought down in the area, had been offside prior to the incident. The São Paulo side's disgust was compounded in with 15 minutes to go, when Atlético were given a spot kick of their own. Obina, who tumbled after minimal contact with a defender, himself stepped up to equalise. Palmeiras will feel hard done by, but still have every chance of progressing.

In Brazil's central plateau, it was Rafael Moura (otherwise known as 'He-Man') who rescued a point for hosts Goiás against Avaí. Moura put the Esmeraldino ahead early on with a smart finish, but Avaí reacted in style. Davi levelled from the penalty spot thanks a shocking decision from referee Wilson Luiz Seneme, before Marcelinho bent in a fine second. In the third minute of injury time, however, Rafael Moura exposed the Skeletors in the closet of the Avaí defence (I'm so, so sorry for that pun) to poke home an equaliser. All to play for in the second leg.

All Four Série A Sides Advance in Copa Sul-Americana

It was a fabulous midweek for the Brazilian clubs in the Copa Sul-Americana, all four of which managed to advance to the quarter final stage. Due to the nature of the competition (all Série A sides are kept in one half of the draw), the results guarantee the presence of a Brazilian club in the final.

In a game disrupted by a power cut at the Arena Bareuri, Palmeiras brushed aside Universitario de Sucre. Kléber headed the Verdão ahead from Gabriel Silva's fine cross, before Luan powered home a second in similar style. Sucre briefly rallied, and pulled one back through Damián Cirillo, but Danilo's close range header sealed a 4-1 aggregate victory for Luiz Felipe Scolari's men. Palmeiras will now face Atlético Mineiro, who went through on aggregate despite losing 1-0 to Santa Fé at altitude in Bogotá. Félix Noguera gave the Colombians hope with a snapshot from distance, but the Galo held on to progress.

Goiás endured a nervy finale to sneak past Uruguayan giants Peñarol at the Centenário. Rafael Moura continued his fine goalscoring form, putting the Esmeraldino ahead with a brilliantly taken effort, but Matías Corujo pounced on Harlei's fumble to level the tie. Goiás were rocking, and would go into the half-time break 2-1 down due to Marcelo Sosa's glorious drive. The Serra Dourada club were restricted to counter attacks in the second period, but grabbed an invaluable second when Carlos Alberto outran the Peñarol defence to slot home. Alejandro Martinuccio set up a frantic final five minutes with a curling finish, but the hosts could not find the goal that would have sent them through.

One down on the night thanks to Joao Rojas' early goal, and 3-1 down on aggregate, one would have put money on Avaí to succumb to Emelec at the Ressacada. The Florianópolis side, however, produced an amazing ten-minute goal rush to shock their Equadorian opponents, and advance to the quarter finals. Roberto got the comeback underway, nodding home Caio's tempting cross, before Avaí found a lovely second. Caio's slide rule pass was met by Roberto, who was unlucky to see his instinctive finish come back off the post. Thankfully for the Leão da Ilha, Eltinho was on hand to turn home the loose ball. Within minutes, the Avaí fans were sent into raptures; centre-back Émerson leapt highest to flick past Elizaga in the Emelec goal.

Neymar Puts Santos in Title Hunt; Copa Sul-Americana Round-up

There were two Brasileirão games on Wednesday night, as Vasco, Corinthians, Santos, and Internacional finally played their games in hand. In continental competition, three out of four of the Série A's representatives in the Copa Sul-Americana won their last-sixteen first-legs.

Corinthians, who so recently appeared to be running away with the Série A title, now face a real battle to get back into contention, after Vasco condemned them to a third straight loss. A weakened Timão were without five of their most important players; none of Ronaldo, Jorge Henrique, Dentinho, Ralf, or Bruno César were fit enough to start at the São Januário. Vasco, on the other hand, look rejuvinated of late, and recorded a 2-0 win thanks to strike pairing Zé Roberto and Éder Luís. The former put the Gigante da Colina into a tenth minute lead, emphatically smashing home from Felipe's tempting cross. Corinthians ought to have equalised immediately, but Iarley contrived to slice wide from two yards out. Instead it was Vasco who put the game to bed; Felipe picked out Éder Luís with a clever ball, and the man on loan from Benfica coolly beat Júlio César in the visitors' goal.

At the Vila Belmiro, a 1-0 win for Santos allowed them to leapfrog opponents Internacional into fourth place. Neymar, lively throughout, bagged the winning goal; tucking home a low finish after a lightening-fast Peixe attack. The seasiders have a comparatively easy Série A run-in, and will now fancy their chances to push the likes of Cruzeiro and Fluminense all the way to the wire.

A brace from Obina handed Atlético Mineiro a useful two-goal advantage over Santa Fé, ahead of the second leg in Bolivia. The striker ran onto Diego Souza's through ball to slot home the opener, before tapping home from close range in the second half. The Galo are finally showing some promising form, and Dorival Júnior's reputation looks set to grow. Palmeiras also overcame Bolivian opposition, beating Universitario de Sucre at the Pátria stadium. Marcos Assunção grabbed the game's only goal with a trademark free-kick.

Avaí played their first official game outside of Brazil, and were unlucky not to nick a point against Ecuadorian giants Emelec. Eltinho's own goal put the home side ahead, but the Leão da Ilha rallied with Marcelinho's smart finish. There would be late heartbreak for the Florianópolis side, however; Rojas' 47th minute strike for Emelec means Avaí have it all to do in the second leg. Goiás, another side hardly setting the Brasileirão alight, battled to a tight 1-0 victory over Uruguayan side Peñarol at the Serra Dourada. Rafael Moura's close range finish was enough to put the Esmeraldino in the driving seat.

Palmeiras and Avaí Through to Last 16 of Copa Sul-Americana

South America's secondary football competition slipped under the radar slightly this week, with the final of the Copa Libertadores understandably hogging the headlines. There were, however, two all-Brazilian second-leg clashes, from which Avaí and Palmeiras progressed to the round of sixteen.

Despite losing on the night to Santos, Avaí's impressive first leg performance proved to be enough to see them through to the next round. The Florianópolis side have rivalled Santos for attacking flair in recent weeks, and lined up at the Ressacada with their in-form attacking quartet of Davi, Robinho (formerly of Santos...no, not that Robinho), Vandinho and Caio. The Peixe, in the wake of the departures of Robinho (that Robinho), André, and Wesley, fielded what is now their strongest XI, hoping to stay in contention for their third title of 2010.

Avaí started with the bit between their teeth, and could twice have taken the lead through Patric and Rudinei. The opening goal, however, would go to Santos, and in some style. Marquinhos, regaining his starting spot (in my opinion, he's a far more useful player than Wesley, the midfielder who was keeping him out of the side) somehow produced an overhead-backheel-throughball (yes, you read that right), sending Zé Éduardo clear to slot past the goalkeeper. It looked as if a Santos comeback was on the cards, but the seasiders were frustrated for the rest of the tie, seeing chance after chance pass them by, and allowing Avaí to hold on for a narrow aggregate win.

Luiz Felipe Scolari, after a frustrating start as Palmeiras coach, guided his side to a second straight win, one which sees the Verdão through to the last sixteen of the competition. Despite resting a number of his star players (Kléber, Ewerton, Lincoln), the home side turning in a strong performance to knock out visiting Vitória.

In front of a packed Pacaembu (due largely to it being the 500th game of goalkeeping legend Marcos), Palmeiras took the lead on the stroke of half time. Marcos Assunção found Tadeu with a terrific pass, and the forward's finish bounced into the net despite a touch from Viáfara in the visitors' goal. Tadeu would go on to grab his second just after the interval, drilling home after Márcio Araújo's skewed shot. The scoring was completed in the final seconds when deadball specialist Marcos Assunção bent home a glorious free-kick from thirty yards.

Goiás and Atlético Mineiro Progress in Copa Sul-Americana

The confusingly-scheduled Copa Sul-Americana continued this week, with no fewer than four all-Brazilian clashes; half of which were decisive second legs. Goiás and Atlético Mineiro, despite their poor league positions, picked up wins to guarantee spots in the last sixteen, whilst Vitória and Avaí took control of their ties with impressive first leg victories.

New Grêmio coach Renato Gaúcho started his reign in the worst possible fashion, seeing his team eliminated from continental competition at the once fortress-like Estádio Olímpico. A hero at the club due to his role in two state championship wins and an Intercontinental Cup title, Renato will need all the goodwill possible if he's to put an end to the Tricolor's recent woes. Despite the return from injury of attacking midfielder Souza, the home side turned in a sloppy performance and were deservedly beaten by Goiás.

With just 8 minutes on the clock, the Esmeraldino snatched the lead. Wendel Santos, in acres of space on the right, curled in a delightful cross for Amaral to head emphatically home. Grêmio, with Jonas all alone up front, looked startlingly bereft of ideas; indeed Renato Gaúcho would take time after the game to emphasise the need for Douglas, the one true creator of the side, to return to form. Grêmio huffed and puffed in midfield, but rarely threatened before the break.

The second half saw a slight improvement; Jonas, Maylson, and Souza all tested Goiás 'keeper Harlei, and the introduction of Hugo and André Lima gave the team added attacking threat. As the seconds ticked by, however, it became increasingly apparent that this wasn't to be Grêmio's night. Indeed, in the final minute of the ninety, Goiás landed a knock-out blow; Everton Santos smashing home after dancing through some non-existant defence from the home side. Goiás progress, while Grêmio must focus on their Série A form.

In the week's other second leg, Atlético Mineiro left it late to sneak into the last sixteen, defeating Grêmio Prudente 1-0 at the Ipatingão. It was Ricardinho who made the difference for the Galo, finishing sweetly at the near post after some slack defending. Atlético will meet Caracas, Santa Fé, or Deportivo Lara in the next round, and will undoubtedly be pleased to have something to take their minds of their abject league form.

Santos came down to earth with a bang from their Copa do Brasil triumph, soundly beaten 3-1 by Avaí in an exciting game at the Pacaembu. With Neymar and Paulo Henrique Ganso only on the bench after their exploits with the seleção, Dorival Júnior handed rare starts to Madson and Zé Éduardo in attack. It was Avaí, though, who came flying out of the blocks; Rudnei's powerful drive opened the scoring after some head tennis on the box. Despite creating countless chances in the remainder of the first half, Santos couldn't find an equaliser, and were left with a mountain to climb when the visitors doubled their lead after the break. Vandinho raced clear after some hesitant Peixe defending, and flighted the deftest of chips over Felipe, who had just come on as a substitute after an injury to Rafael. Golaço!

The introduction of Neymar and Ganso predictably injected some life into the seasiders, who promptly pulled a goal back; Zé Éduardo finishing powerfully into the roof of the net after Neymar's surging run. The last word, however, would go to Avaí. Caio, in an absurb amount of space after a calamitous Santos offside trap, unselfishly squared the ball to Vandinho who tucked away his second of the evening. The Peixe have it all to do in the return leg.

Luiz Felipe's winless (re)start at Palmeiras continued, as the Verdão went down 2-0 to Vitória in Salvador. Ramon put the Leão ahead with a trademark free-kick in the opening minute of the second half, before Neto Coruja's header made it two in the dying minutes. Palmeiras will hope that the return of Chilean playmaker Jorge Valdivia will provide the catalyst for a return to winning ways in the coming weeks.
